Schools & Multi-Academy Trusts

Reduce heating waste without compromising the learning environment.

Energenie gives schools and academy trusts room-level visibility, intelligent heating control and estate-wide energy insight — helping estates teams identify avoidable waste, reduce cost and prove what is working.

The challenge

Most school heating waste is operational.

School estates combine classrooms, boarding houses, sports facilities, offices, halls and older buildings — often with different schedules, heating systems and occupancy patterns.

01

Heating empty spaces

Classrooms and buildings can continue heating during evenings, weekends, holidays or timetable gaps.

02

Limited room-level control

Central systems rarely show which individual rooms are too hot, too cold or being heated unnecessarily.

03

Complex estates

Different building ages, uses and heating systems make it difficult to manage the whole estate through one operating approach.

04

Manual scheduling

Heating schedules can drift away from real timetables, term dates and actual occupancy.

05

Budget pressure

Estates teams need to reduce operating cost while protecting classroom comfort and directing capital to the right buildings.

06

Weak evidence

Without baseline data it is difficult to prove savings, prioritise investment or verify that an intervention worked.

The Energenie approach

Monitor. Analyse. Optimise. Report.

Start by understanding how the estate actually behaves. Then use that evidence to target control, operational change and investment.

01 — MONITOR

See what is happening

Capture temperature, heating behaviour, environmental conditions and energy consumption across rooms, buildings and sites.

02 — ANALYSE

Find the waste

Compare rooms and buildings to identify out-of-hours heating, anomalies and avoidable consumption.

03 — OPTIMISE

Control intelligently

Align heating with timetables, term dates and building use while retaining local comfort where required.

04 — REPORT

Prove the outcome

Measure performance, demonstrate savings and create evidence for estates planning, governors and funding decisions.

One estate view

From individual rooms to the whole trust.

The value is not simply collecting more data. It is giving estates teams enough visibility to understand where they should act.

  • Room and zone temperature
  • Heating status and radiator behaviour
  • Humidity and environmental conditions
  • CO₂ monitoring where required
  • Electricity and 3-phase energy monitoring
  • Solar generation monitoring
  • Compare buildings and schools
  • Identify out-of-hours energy use
  • Spot unusual heating profiles
  • Track changes after interventions
  • Understand portfolio trends
  • Support cost, carbon and estate reporting

Proven in a complex school estate

The Leys School, Cambridge

A retrofit system that became part of the way the estate is operated.

The Leys deployed Energenie across more than 20 buildings, using 967 smart radiator valves to give the estates team greater control over a complex mix of teaching, boarding and operational spaces.

Heating can be aligned with school timetables and term dates, while the platform provides visibility across the estate without requiring intrusive replacement of the underlying heating system.

After the initial three-year contract, The Leys renewed for a further three years.

Investment & funding

Better evidence supports better estate decisions.

Energy monitoring and room-level data can help schools understand where heating is being wasted, establish a stronger baseline and quantify the opportunity before committing capital.

That evidence can also support the development of energy-efficiency business cases and relevant capital-funding applications, including CIF and SCA programmes where applicable.

Where to start

You do not need to replace the whole heating system to begin.

Energenie is designed around retrofit. A project can start with monitoring, targeted control or a specific building and expand as the evidence demonstrates where the greatest opportunity exists.

A

Start with data

Monitor a building or part of the estate to identify where energy and comfort problems actually occur.

B

Target the opportunity

Prioritise the rooms, buildings and schedules with the strongest evidence of avoidable waste.

C

Expand based on results

Use measured outcomes to support wider deployment across the school or trust.

Frequently asked questions

School energy management questions.

How can schools reduce heating energy waste?

The starting point is to understand when and where heating is being used unnecessarily. Room-level monitoring and better scheduling can identify heating during evenings, weekends, holidays and timetable gaps, allowing estates teams to target the highest-value changes.

Can Energenie work with existing school heating systems?

Energenie is designed as a retrofit solution. The appropriate deployment depends on the existing heating system, but projects do not necessarily require wholesale replacement of boilers or building-management infrastructure.

Can a multi-academy trust compare different schools?

Yes. The platform is designed to provide visibility from individual rooms and buildings through to portfolio level, allowing trusts to identify unusual performance and compare sites.

Can heating schedules follow school timetables and term dates?

Yes. Heating-control strategies can be aligned with operating schedules, including school timetables, holidays and term dates.

Can energy data support CIF or SCA funding applications?

Building-performance data can help demonstrate existing conditions, quantify potential improvement and strengthen the evidence behind an investment proposal. Current programme eligibility and application requirements should always be checked.

How quickly can a school start?

A school does not necessarily need to deploy across the entire estate immediately. Monitoring or control can begin with a specific building, area or identified problem and expand once the evidence supports wider rollout.

Reduce waste. Protect comfort. Prove the outcome.

Start with the building data you do not currently have.

Whether you manage one school or an academy trust, Energenie can help identify where heating and energy are being wasted and build an evidence-led route to improvement.
